swordfishing
Xiphias
Gladius is the scientific name for swordfish. Gladius is latin
for sword. Swordfish are commonly referred to as the purple
gladiator, I think it is because this fish fights to its death.
Pound per pound the swordfish is world renowned for its unpredictability
and brute strength. Swordfish inhabit the waters south of
Key West year round, with larger fish showing up in the winter
and spring. Swordfish trips generally depart about an hour
and a half to two hours before sunset. We will be traveling
between 16 to 25 miles which gives ample time to checkout
the conditions while it is still light. I fish with 50 and
80 pound test, which gives us a sporting chance at a big fish.
This may sound like overkill, but I've seen 70 pound fish
fight for 2 hours on 50 pound. I can't even compare this fish
to the other billfish in its family. Catching a swordfish
is truly an awesome and totally gratifying experience. The
fish can be mounted or if the fish is legal we will harvest
the fish and I can arrange to have the sword mounted by a
local artist in south Florida. If you have never caught or
seen a real live swordfish then all I can say is you don't
know what you are missing.
